Assessments

At Therapaeds we provide holistic Occupational Therapy assessments utilizing evidence based and standardized assessment tools combined with advanced clinical observations. We conduct the following assessments:

Occupational Therapy Screener

Occupational Therapy Screener is an initial starting point to help caregivers rule out the need for further occupational therapy support. It is based on clinical observations only.

Comprehensive Sensory Integration Evaluation

This assessment involves evaluating the sensory processing and integration profile of the child using the performance based test called Sensory Integration and Praxis Test which is the gold standard for measuring sensory integration differences and challenges. This is combined with advanced clinical observation and questionnaires to provide a holistic view of the child’s sensory processing skills needed for functional participation.

All our assessments include a parent feedback meeting to discuss the findings and recommendations to support the child.

Handwriting Evaluations

This assessment focuses on the fine motor and handwriting skills needed for academic participation. It is suitable for children who struggle to write, complete exams and need accommodations for exams.

Parent Coaching and Home Based Services

Parent coaching sessions occur face to face or online without the child present. It allows the occupational therapist and the parent/carer to talk openly. The occupational therapist guides the parents through a developmental and evidence based process that empowers the parent to support their child in various situations and environments; thus achieving the occupational therapy goals holistically.

Home-based therapy sessions allow therapists to tailor treatments in ways not possible in clinical environments. Therapists see the home environment and how children interact with it firsthand. We use the child’s favorite toys, work in a favorite room and have parents assist in treatments to motivate the child into achieving their goals. Parent education has a larger emphasis in home-based sessions.

Camps / Groups

Occupational therapy groups are opportunities for kids to connect with peers while working on key skills and engaging in activities that reinforce their areas of need. This may include addressing social emotional development, emotional regulation, fine motor skills, gross motor skills, handwriting and others. Group therapy can also be done alone or in combination with one-to-one therapies.
Occupational Therapy groups are safe, supportive environments for kids to share their skills, encourage each other, and work together to develop new skills. It’s a structured setting to start practicing generalization of the skills we’re working on in our individual  occupational therapy sessions. Research indicates that group therapy can be very effective for children of all ages, ranging from early childhood to adolescence.

Benefits of Group Occupational Therapy include and are not limited to:

  • Learning alongside in the company of others
  • Emotional regulation
  • Supporting sense of self and confidence
  • Growth of social emotional capacities
  • Greater independence
  • Promoting inclusion
  • Social problem-solving
